Are you a musician, a music-lover or a music-business professional living in a Mediterranean country, going there or just plain curious about the musical community of the "cradle of civilization"?

At long last, here's a place just for YOU!

Hi, I'm Mark Harris,

The Internet is bursting with great services, concert listings and bulletin boards for American musicians (I know, I'm an American expat myself and a seasoned netsurfer)!

But what about:

  • the singer near Tripoli who needs to fix her favorite mike for a concert next week and isn't sure which is the most dependable repair service in town, or
  • the computer musician in Sarajevo who needs to borrow a Roland MC-500 to recoup some old files, or
  • the electronics engineer from Tokyo, also an amateur cellist, being transferred to Malta for work and wondering where he'll be able to play with other musicians, or...

  • the Seattle guitarist looking for a reliable source for an original electric Turkish saz, or
  • the enthusiastic fan in Paris who wants to know who's playing on a CD she's found by an artist from Algiers, or
  • the journalist going on holiday, thinking about doing a piece on jazz night-life in never-visited Beirut and trying to arrange as many interviews as possible in advance for the week he'll be there, or...

  • the band in Barcelona that wants some Nubian percussionists on their new CD, or
  • the '60s record collector in Heraklion who wants to track down others on Crete, or
  • the high-school class in San Francisco doing a project on belly-dancing and looking for suggestions on "authentic" CDs, or...

  • YOU?!

Beam together with other "note-heads" - whatever your flag - and help create new rhythms all over the world!

WHAT THE REST OF THE NET OFFERS:

Whatever your needs and desires, chances are the generic "click on your country" international services offered by a few Stateside bulletin boards (with drop-down menus hastily enlisted from the credit-card ordering page) seem inadequate and impersonal, forcing you to search through hundreds of messages to find something in the specific area you have in mind.

WHAT SAINT ROCK OFFERS:

We've taken the trouble to set up each country's bulletin board with local subdivisions (provinces, regions and the like) and a few major cities so that you're communicating with folks right where you need to; you have instant access to local musicians' "neighborhoods", to make offers and requests, to ask and answer questions, to announce concerts and all things musical! If we see a lot of activity in an area, we may even introduce finer subdivisions (other cities, even quarters) in the future!

HOW IT WORKS:

You select and click on a country on the entry page (by top-level domain: e.g. France = .fr, Algeria = .dz, etc.), which takes to the Bulletin Board where current messages are on display. When you're a member, you can write: just choose an area in the drop-down menu and post your local message. This will be left up for about a month, unless we take it down because it has nothing to do with music or musicians, we judge it offensive or otherwise inappropriate, or you're a business (serious businesses can contact us for moderately priced and effectively targeted advertising).

THE COUNTRIES:

With regard to the use of the Internet, the Mediterranean area is unique in that it contains everything from countries where it's been heavily censored and practically banned to countries where it's use is actively encouraged and already startlingly wide-spread, with all shades of attitude and advancement in between. The original idea for Terra Media was to to offer a unique rendezvous service for scattered refugee and expat musicians; if you know any personally, or are aware of organizations that are in touch with them, please help spread the good news!

We're starting with the 23 top-level domains that touch the Mediterranean directly - from Italy all the way around clockwise to Monaco - and plan to add later this year their 22 neighbors, and later...

HOW TO START:

To protect you and our site from spammers and other undesired visitors, we're running this section as a "Club" with rules. To sign up - it's free, naturally -, you must acknowledge your acceptance of these stated Club Rules (any future variations of which will be communicated to you for your acknowledgement or withdrawal) and supply the required info on the registration form ("Join", which is where you can later modify anything except your username). When your application form has been processed and approved, you're in, and you can modify your personal info (everything except your username) from the "Join" page!

Members will enjoy many benefits, and the breadth of activity we're planning is very exciting so sign up now and come join the growing Mediterranean Musical Community!

Best Regards,

p.s. "Terra media", apart from the jumbled echoes of "Mediterranean" and the modern buzzword connotation of "media", actually means "neutral ground" in Latin, and that's what I'm aiming for: a place where musicians take the lead for creating a vast, creative and above all peace-loving community.

p.p.s. send your good ideas and comments!
